$50 million for irrigation project in Kurdistan

  The Planning Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Kurdistan announced that the Parliament has allocated some $50 million US Dollars for the Completion of the Shamamek irrigation project in Kurdistan.

In his speech, Ali Rashid said: “The Ministry has discussed the details of the irrigation project and the possibility of sending its projected steps to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. Moreover, the Kurdistan Parliament has approved the initiative from its side allocating the sum the needed sum from the 2010 budget”.
Rashid added: “the Ministry is currently discussing the agreement with several U.S. companies, set to design and execute the project”.
“The project includes the extension of the water network of the small Zab River by 80 to 85 km so it reaches Shamamek”, pointing out that the “completion of this project will positively affect the recovery of the agricultural sector in Kurdistan , the revival and rebuilding of the rural areas in that region”.
Italy has decided to grant the Iraqi government a $100 million loan, 17% of which will be allocated to the Kurdistan region for the revival of its agricultural sector, highlighting that: “Via that loan, Italy is looking forward to directly accessing and supervising the Kurdistan agriculture and irrigation, providing farmers with the necessary machinery and tools”.
