Iraq allows the purchase of sugar directly without tenders
  Posted on 24 Feb 2010
Iraqi Council of Ministers authorized the Minister of Commerce to buy sugar directly from suppliers without the need for competitive bidding.
The Council did not give the reason behind this decision in the statement issued. It said that the conditional mandate is not to increase the price paid for the world market prices.
Iraq consumes about 60 thousand tons of sugar per month. And the Ministry of Trade imported in recent months, quantities of sugar from Brazil, Britain , the United Arab Emirates, France, Belgium, Thailand and Argentina.
The conditions of agriculture sector in Iraq declined after decades of war. And Exacerbated the damage by drought that hit the country in the past few years.
Iraq, which was once a regional breadbasket, is now one of the largest importers of rice and wheat in the world and major importer of sugar.
