Discussions are under way between the Jordan Telecom Group (JTG) and Al Shamel Company for the creation of a city for IT, communications and media in the Naour area, a JTG official said. The group’s chief financial officer, Raslan Diranieh, told The Jordan Times that the partnering firm, which is owned by a group of investors from the Gulf and with Jordanian stakeholders, obtained Cabinet approval to establish the city. Chairman of JTG’s Board of Directors Shabib Ammari said the city is expected to attract $500 million worth of investments, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Ammari added that the city will be developed in cooperation with international companies and through international partnerships. The chairman said the group has received the results of two studies conducted for the implementation of the project, adding that further studies will be carried out. The JTG will contribute to the project by providing a 247-dunum plot of land it owns in Naour and providing the required communications infrastructure, said Ammari. “The city seeks to contribute to making Jordan a regional hub for ICT and attracting investments in this regard,” Ammari said. In 2000, France Telecom entered as a strategic partner and started increasing its share in the group until it obtained 51 per cent of shares, becoming the majority shareholder. Jordan Times
